Switzerland: Blue Solutions signs a collaboration agreement with BFH on solid-state lithium battery data

Bern, Paris – August 3rd, 2023. Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) is to conduct research for Blue Solutions on two data management projects concerning solid-state batteries.

Designer and producer of lithium metal polymer (LMP®) batteries for commercial vehicles for over 12 years and established on two continents (Europe and North America), Blue Solutions, part of the Bolloré Group, has signed a framework contract with the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH). The two partners plan to exchange know-how and conduct joint projects in the field of big-data analysis and automatic learning applied to production and usage data.

BFH will conduct scientific research into the characterization and modeling of electrochemical battery cells and modules, and trials of complete systems. The university will focus on two main projects:

  • First project: analysis of battery data from the application environment with the objective of finding usage links to optimize battery charge life and battery service life;
  • Second project: analysis of production data to contribute to the continuous improvement of the management of Blue Solutions processes and the quality of its batteries.

Founded in October 1997, the Bern University of Applied Sciences is a vocational university. The Energy Storage Center at BFH is dedicated to the R&D of electricity storage solutions for supplying power and mobility in tomorrow’s world.

This partnership comes several days after the announcement on July 20 of a scientific collaboration agreement between Blue Solutions and the CSEM (Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology) based in Neuchâtel.

These partnerships build on the numerous international R&D projects already undertaken by Blue Solutions with a view to developing the next generation of solid-state batteries, of such crucial importance in the transition toward all-electric.

Richard Bouveret, President, and CEO of Blue Solutions

“We are delighted to have secured this partnership with the Bern University of Applied Sciences, whose expertise will provide a valuable contribution to our research and development strategy for solid-state batteries. It also demonstrates our strong commitment to the Canton of Bern and more generally to Switzerland, with its proven track record in academic know-how and research capabilities.”

Dr. Andrea Vezzini, Professor of industrial electronics at Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH)

“Alongside teaching, research, development and services are among the key skills of BFH. This partnership with Blue Solutions in the crucial field of solid-state electric batteries will serve as another demonstration of this, and we are delighted to be able to work alongside such a major partner in this sector.”
