Blue Solutions to Produce Next-Generation Solid-State Batteries in France : Announcement from the French ministry of economics and finance, Brittanny and Grand-Est regions

On May 17, 2024, Blue Solutions marked a defining moment in the evolution of sustainable energy and mobility. The company welcomed prominent figures, including Bruno Le Maire, Minister of Economy, Finance, and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, to its production facility in Ergué-Gabéric, Brittany. This milestone event celebrated the beginning of an ambitious venture to manufacture next-generation solid-state batteries—a groundbreaking technology that ushers in new possibilities for the electric vehicle sector.
Blue Solutions distinguishes itself as the world’s only industrial-scale producer of solid-state Lithium-Metal batteries. Designed to surpass traditional lithium-ion alternatives, the upcoming fourth-generation (GEN4) batteries will offer 40% greater autonomy, enhanced safety, and a more eco-friendly footprint. These advancements pave the way for a revolutionary shift in energy storage, catering to the automotive market’s growing demand for high-performing and sustainable solutions.
Research and development lie at the heart of this initiative. A sophisticated R&D center and pilot production line in Brittany will drive continuous innovation and refinement before Blue Solutions expands GEN4 battery production to Alsace by 2030.
Blue Solutions has set its sights on creating 1,500 jobs by 2032, supported by an investment exceeding €2.2 billion. Once complete, the company’s future gigafactory will achieve an impressive annual production capacity of 25 GWh, translating to batteries for 250,000 electric vehicles each year. This scale of production secures access to advanced battery technology for consumers across France and Europe, while simultaneously bolstering the region’s industrial base.
At a time when Europe is navigating fierce competition in the global battery market, particularly from Asian manufacturers, Blue Solutions is spearheading an effort to strengthen France’s industrial sovereignty. This project aligns with broader state initiatives such as France 2030, which aims to achieve an annual production of 2 million electrified vehicles, and the Green Industry Investment Tax Credit (C3IV), which incentivizes ecological and industrial transition projects.
Blue Solutions’ commitment extends beyond innovation—it reflects a mission to cultivate economic resilience, support environmental goals, and make France a leader in sustainable mobility. With these bold steps forward, the company solidifies its role as a key player in setting the course for Europe’s renewable energy future.
